Kingdom of Pontus

The kingdom of Pontus developed along the southern Black Sea coast under a dynasty with Iranian ancestry and strong connections to the Hellenistic world. Its rulers governed inland valleys as well as coastal towns, using royal centres and fortified strongholds to control routes through northern Asia Minor. Mithridates VI expanded Pontic power around the Black Sea and fought a series of wars against Rome. Rock-cut royal tombs, hilltop fortresses and a garrison in Crimea connect that political history with the region’s varied terrain.
