History

Dehdasht Caravanserai is a Safavid-period caravanserai in Dehdasht, Iran. The Safavid dynasty ruled much of Iran from the sixteenth to the early eighteenth century and supported roads, trade infrastructure, and monumental architecture. A caravanserai was a roadside complex where merchants, caravans, and other travelers could obtain lodging and services.

The complex functioned as both a caravanserai and a saray, a Persian term for an inn or caravanserai. Its facilities served the needs of travelers and caravans. The site stands on Abuzar Ghafari Street beside a bathhouse, placing it within the historic infrastructure that supported movement through Dehdasht.

Dehdasht Caravanserai was nationally registered as one of Iran’s national heritage monuments under registration no. 3551. In 2023, it became part of The Persian Caravanserai, a UNESCO World Heritage property comprising 54 historic caravanserais across 24 Iranian provinces. The property was inscribed under cultural criteria (ii) and (iii), with registration no. 1668, and is recognized as Iran’s 27th World Heritage property.
