History

Sarayan Caravanserai is a Safavid-era roadside lodging and service complex in Sarayan, South Khorasan Province, Iran. It was built during the Safavid era, when the Safavid dynasty ruled Iran from 1501 to 1736, to serve traveling merchants and caravans.

The caravanserai was restored in the early twenty-first century and is now used as a museum. The first phase of the Sarayan County Ethnology Museum opened in its camel stable in the year the restoration was completed. The site was registered as an Iranian national monument under number 8733 in the early twenty-first century. In 2023, it became part of UNESCO’s World Heritage property The Persian Caravanserai, alongside 53 other caravanserais in 24 Iranian provinces.

Remains

The caravanserai has a two-iwan plan arranged around a courtyard. An iwan is a vaulted space open on one side, often facing a courtyard. The complex includes an entrance portal, chambers, storage and service areas, and camel stables.

A public bathhouse, a mudbrick cistern, and a bazaar stand adjacent to the caravanserai.
