Ariarathes II and the Ariarathid Dynasty: Historical Insights from Ancient Cappadocia

Introduction

Ariarathes II (Ancient Greek Ἀριαράθης) was a member of the Ariarathid dynasty who restored his family\’s rule in southern Cappadocia and is recorded as ruling from 301 to 280 BC. He was the son of Holophernes and the nephew and adopted heir of Ariarathes I. After the execution of Ariarathes I and members of the ruling family, Ariarathes II fled with a small following to Armenia.

Following the deaths of Perdiccas and Eumenes and while Antigonus was engaged elsewhere, Ariarathes II returned with Armenian troops supplied by King Ardoates, defeated and killed the Macedonian satrap Amyntas in 301 BC, and recovered control of southern Cappadocia. Sources describe him as exercising a degree of semi‑autonomy but indicate he accepted Seleucid suzerainty. Ancient genealogical accounts leave open whether he received a formal royal coronation. He left at least three sons and was succeeded by his eldest, Ariaramnes.
