History
Burg Walternienburg is a small castle in Germany, located in Walternienburg, now part of Zerbst/Anhalt in Saxony-Anhalt. The site was first mentioned in 973 as “nigenburg” in connection with the transfer of the trade and honey tithe to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, an ecclesiastical principality governed by an archbishop.
Early Fortification and Quedlinburg Rule
In 974, the surrounding district, or pagus, of “nigenburg” passed to Quedlinburg Abbey, a major religious foundation governed by an abbess. The abbess granted the district to the Lords of Arnstein. The beginnings of the fortification remain uncertain. It may have been an early German stronghold comparable to the one at Loburg, or it may have developed from an older Slavic castle.
Once the castle lost its strategic importance as a border fort, it became an administrative seat. The Counts of Arnstein-Barby acted as bailiffs of Quedlinburg Abbey. A bailiff was an official responsible for the secular and often judicial administration of a religious institution’s territory.
Medieval and Early Modern Transformation
The castle’s approximately 30-metre-high keep was built in the fourteenth century. By 1359, the name had acquired the prefix “Walter-”, possibly referring to Count Walter II of Arnstein-Barby. After the Barby counts died out, the Walternienburg administrative district came under the Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst in 1659.
Major alterations during the second half of the eighteenth century created the appearance that shaped the castle through the twentieth century. Walternienburg became Prussian territory in 1815. After the Second World War, the buildings were used only as housing and gradually deteriorated. When the castle no longer had a use after 1973, demolition of its buildings began in 1988. Burg Walternienburg is protected as a cultural heritage monument of Saxony-Anhalt.
Remains
Lowland Castle Layout
Burg Walternienburg is a lowland castle on the Nuthe, built on relatively level terrain. Its former defensive arrangement of ramparts and ditches remains clearly recognizable. The site also preserves remains of a surrounding curtain wall, an enclosing defensive wall, together with parts of the wider rampart, ditch, and wall system.
Medieval Keep
The keep is the principal surviving structure and represents the medieval fabric of the castle. Built in the fourteenth century, it rises approximately 30 metres and has walls about 3.5 metres thick. Its interior measures only 2 by 2 metres. A half-timbered upper section contains a room, and half-timbered construction also forms part of the castle’s surviving architectural character.
